May Chan

Director

Architecture is a learning process for all, from the client to the contractor, in order to create a building that keeps the needs and wants of the client as a vision.

In addition to architectural design, May Chan has extensive expertise in brief formulation, design coordination and client/project management with a proven track record in large-scale retail projects in the UAE market. Her body of work includes being a key member of the team that completed The Dubai Mall, one of the largest malls in the world at the time, within a tight delivery timeline and the Dubai Creek Harbour Retail Development, an iconic project that was set to be larger than the Dubai Mall and atypical from the standard form of large retail buildings.

Through her tenure in the UAE, May has learned to adapt, assimilate and advance her design and processes to deliver contextually appropriate developments regardless of the locale. She recognizes that architectural design is a continual process that requires constant adaptation as the project progresses. This has enabled May to remain agile and effective in design coordination and project management so as to ensure the success of a project as well as meeting the needs of the client.

May’s combined understanding of the built environment sector in the region, versatile work nature, and depth of knowledge and experience in retail developments have led May to pioneer projects and build DPA’s presence in new markets such as Doha, Morocco, Egypt and Saudi Arabia. Among her portfolio are retail-tainment projects such as the Doha Festival City mall, a regional super mall with the world’s first Angry Bird theme park; and, the Mall of Rabat in Morocco, a unique shopping wonderland that marries urban elements with landscape.
