Alexandra Central

Angles and curves

Alexandra Central is a mixed commercial development located at the prominent northeast corner of Jalan Bukit Merah and Alexandra Road, and comprises a 19-storey hotel tower perched on a 6-storey podium and 3 levels of strata-subdivided retail floors.

The hotel tower’s simple box form is perched at the edge of the 6th storey podium. Near the top of the tower, a cantilevered glass box slides out from the edge of the tower to give the hotel its signature form, bringing an elegant finesse to a simple rectangular box. The podium roof houses lavish landscaped hotel facilities and provides spectacular views of both the city and the green Southern Ridges.

Sited in an emerging regional centre, Alexandra Central is designed in response to both present and future needs – in function, form and façade.
The cylindrical glass volume at the road intersection emphasises the corner junction and signify the main pedestrian entrance.
Hotel facilities on the seventh storey landscaped podium roof.
The simple box of the hotel tower is perched at the edge of the podium and supported by two six-storey columns. Near the top of the tower, a cantilevered glass box slides out from the edge to give the hotel its signature form.

In contrast to the splayed linear edges of the hotel tower and the Bukit Merah façade, a sinuous, curved façade is introduced to sweep along the entire length of the frontage facing Alexandra Road. This separates the exclusive double volume hotel lobby and drop-off area from the cylindrical glass volume placed at the road intersection to emphasize the corner junction and signify the main pedestrian entrance. Given the orientation of the hotel tower to capitalise on views, the resultant east and west façade of the hotel is articulated with highly tinted double-glazed windows to minimise the effects of solar heat gain.

The landscape design is based on a composition of organic and geometric forms to create a dynamic space. The distinction between public and private landscape areas is seamlessly integrated by the clever use of planting islands and continuous paving that extends from the sidewalk to the edge of the commercial development.
