Great Architectural Bake-off

ALL NEWS

The Great Architectural Bake-off, organised by WTAG Singapore, was held on Saturday, 14 October 2017 at co-working space–The Working Capitol. This cake-making competition saw eight renowned architectural firms, including CPG Consultants and Gensler, competing with various renditions of prominent architecture buildings.

DP Architects’ Esplanade ‘durian’ cake emerged as the winning entry. The architects’ baking skills were put to the test with the challenge of re-creating the iconic spiky-dome exterior. Under the exterior of each dome was a wondrous four-layered delectable goodness; the first made from durian and buttermilk, and the other was a local favourite, chocolate malt drink Milo.

Lauded for its “beauty and simplicity”, Ms Eve Felder, managing director of The Culinary Institute of America and member of the jury panel, praised the team for their teamwork and dedication to the finest of details to put together the whole cake – “The final result was absolutely beautiful.” The six-member judging panel also included Mr Fong Hoo Cheong, executive director of Singapore Institute of Architects and Ms Tay Suan Chiang, Business Times’ architecture and design correspondent.

Mr Bernard Tay, DPA associate director, explained the iconic theatre was selected as “it was the building the DP team could relate to, and have a personal memory of.” DPA, with British company Michael Wilford & Partners (MWP), co-designed the actual Esplanade–Theatres on the Bay. Emerging victorious was especially sweet as The Esplanades celebrates its 15th birthday and home-grown architecture firm, DP Architects celebrates its golden jubilee this year.
