Ms Angelene Chan – recipient of the President’s Design Award (P*DA) 2018 Designer of the Year – joined three other P*DA Design of the Year recipients, Mr Phua Hong Wei for Oasia Hotel Downtown, Mr Khoo Peng Beng for The Tembusu and Mr Look Boon Gee for China Fuzhou Jin Niu Shan Trans-Urban Connector (Fudao) in a panel discussion on design and its impacts at the P*DA Recipients’ Forum II. The panel discussion was held on 6 August at the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) Centre and was facilitated by Professor Erwin Viray, Jury Member of the P*DA and Head of Pillar, Architecture and Sustainable Design at SUTD.

Presenting to an audience of approximately 300 attendees, Angelene shared about her body of work and how they respond to the Four Impacts of Design which make up the judging criteria for the P*DA. The Four Impacts of Design are namely, enabling economic transformation; raising the quality of life; advancing the Singapore brand, culture and communities; and making ground-breaking achievements in the field of design. Angelene shared design insights into Novotel & Mercure Singapore on Stevens and Yotel Singapore, and how they enable economic transformation by contributing to the tourism industry; the Temasek Club and Beonnevaux Meditation Retreat Centre and how they raise the quality of life by providing spaces for respite and recreation; Noon Square Mall and The Dubai Mall and how they advance the Singapore brand by being notable projects overseas; and Wisma Atria and Sunray Woodcraft Headquarters and how they made ground-breaking achievements in design that redefined the retail and industrial typologies, respectively.
