Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine seeks to provide a creative and conducive environment for cross-disciplinary medical learning, knowledge exchange and skills acquisition. The project’s verticality and layout is a creative response to geographic challenges imposed by the site, successfully negotiating an amalgamation of spatial form and function.
A progressive vertical spatial organisation was subsequently derived, from public areas at the lower levels to the most intimate and iconic space on top. Four inter-related zones were generated, each with its own unique character.
Various triple-volume internal atrium spaces within the building encourage vertical mobility and visual connections between the multiple floors of offices and laboratories. These are spaces for students and researchers to dwell and collaborate. They are also key areas adorned with art murals. This creates a warmer ambience that engenders a social communal connection, spurring innovation and creative thinking.
Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine has become an exemplar of DP’s ability to create beautiful projects that have functional and eco-sustainable resonance, being a proud recipient of the BCA Green Mark Platinum rating. This laudatory achievement stems from the multiple innovative passive and active strategies employed to achieve energy-efficiency and environmental sustainability. Enabling strong foundations in sustainability while enhancing the central human experience, illustrates the hallmarks of DP’s design principles to produce quality projects.
