Derived in response to the natural surroundings of the adjacent Lornie Reserve, the design and planning of Singapore Island Country Club harnesses nature as its backdrop and expands the definition of ‘sustainability’.
The site utilisation takes cues from the existing topography, leveraging the natural elevational difference between the road and the site to create a new datum and space for facilities. This crucially allows the architectural scheme to integrate the green deck and car park without additional excavation, preserving the site’s ecological integrity.
This respect for nature and emphasis on site conservation extends into the architectural programming, which sensitively establishes three key scales of connection to the surrounding natural environment. Informed by the courtyard that serves as a visual link for the three floors, the stratified layers of programmes are mapped to the spatial experience of the rainforest. Complementing the indoor spaces, the green platform outdoors accommodates landscape and water bodies, reducing the urban heat island effect. These compact zoning strategies facilitate the dialogue between nature and the built environment, integrating programmes with green open areas to offer an immersive experience for users.
Addressing potential evolving needs, the architectural scheme focuses on spatial flexibility. With pavilions allowing a wide range of uses, the space can also be easily configured to meet the club’s future requirements or changing demands.
