Playing to the high visibility afforded by the unique location of the site, the architectural scheme sought to create a distinct yet functional built form and façade. This was expressed in a stacked box design that is not only an expression of the client’s industry of trade. The interconnected volumes, which correspond to their interior functions such as factory production, warehouse, private workers’ quarters and the office, are also advantageous for programming spaces that cater to an effective and efficient flow of work and activities within.

This is further complemented by a façade envelope of yellow aluminum louvres and concrete. Beyond aesthetics, the louvres enable an open, climate-sensitive environment for comfortable living and working by allowing natural ventilation and light through while shading workers from direct sun and rain exposure. DP Engineers, who were the appointed Structural and M&E engineers, worked closely with the design team to realise the overall architectural vision; designing structural frames that are both efficient and economical while complying with the local buildability score.

The first to be completed as part of the newly-positioned International Furniture Hub, the architectural design is a refreshing take on the light industry factory. It also energises and demonstrates the Sunray brand as a leader in its field.

The design for Sunray’s headquarters redefines the notion of tropical architecture and the characteristic wood and furniture factory – from the conventional open-sided, corrugated metal roofed warehouse commonly seen in the region to a highly efficient and aesthetically appealing one.
