Building sustainable townships goes beyond going green. In the live webinar co-organised by BuildSG and Centre for Liveable Cities Singapore, a panel of planners, designers and smart solution providers spoke about the discourse of planning and designing townships that are not only environmentally, but also socially and economically sustainable. Ms Chan Hui Min, director at DP Architects, shared how sustainability should be a consideration right from the onset of design conceptualisation.

Hui Min believes that the path to a sustainable development requires long-term vision, which can be enabled by innovative technology. Drawing from two mixed-use projects designed by DP Architects, Connexion and Paya Lebar Quarter, she illustrated how DP has delivered this by leveraging on the strengths of multi-disciplinary design approach and smart technologies.

She highlights that the COVID-19 pandemic has revealed that good designs, more than before, need to be flexible, resilient and takes care of the well-being of its users. With sustainable design at the core of DP Architect’s designs, she shared how DP measures the performance of our designs with the designFIRST framework and has recently, deepened its commitment to take positive action in response to climate crises with the Construction Declares global petition. She concluded her session by sharing about DP Architects’ Living Lab that is a testbed for how smart analytics can provide insight on how we can improve design to promote wellness and combat climate change.

The insightful live webinar was held on June 18 with the purpose of exploring the various solutions and addressing challenges faced, both in Singapore and beyond our borders, by the industry leaders when creating a smart and sustainable township.
